There are a lot of people who own cameras and like to take photos, but who also want to learn how to take better photos.

There are a lot of photo courses available, from community centres to universities, but a lot of these courses are based in the film world of 50 years ago. Many beginner courses start off with a discussion of exposure (shutter speeds and apertures) and other technical topics. I agree that a knowledge of these is important, but I don’t think it is really relevant for a beginner course. Every digital camera (other than some technical cameras that are completely irrelevant for the discussion at hand) has automatic settings for exposure and focus. In fact it is often MUCH harder to get some cameras to override these automatic settings. I think a course on photography should instead emphasize the creative seeing aspect of photography.

As I write this I am putting together such a lesson. We will see if I am right…
